How To Dry Out a Cell Phone that's Been Dropped in Water

The cell phone plays a big part in people’s lives today. It is used to communicate with friends, family and people in the workplace. It’s very important to have it fixed immediately if it is damaged. One of the reasons for damage is getting the cell phone wet. Others accidentally drop it in the sink and even in the toilet. Some put their cellphones in their pockets and forget to remove when washing clothes. If you swim with your cell phone or got wet because of the rain, don’t panic, as there are several ways to dry your cellphone and prevent damage.
• Take the cellphone out of the water immediately. Don’t let it soak in the water for a long time. Even if the cellphone has a tight cover, water will start going inside after a few seconds. Don’t switch the phone on to test if it’s still working. This may cause the phone to short circuit. Remember to dry first before checking if it’s still working.
• Open the cellphone and remove the battery. If you’re not sure how to do it, read the manual of your cellphone for the steps. Cutting the power to your cellphone will avoid damaging other circuits on the phone.
• Check if the phone is water damaged by looking in the corner near where the battery is inserted. If there is a white square or circle it means it’s not damaged. However, if you see a pink or red color, this means that the phone is water damaged. You may still continue with the steps to try to save your cellphone.
• Remove the SIM card of your cellphone. Though SIM cards do not easily get damaged by being soaked in the water, the steps in drying the cellphone might damage them. To make sure it will not be damaged, remove it from the cellphone and gently pat it with a cloth and put aside.
• Remove the covers and other peripherals of the cellphone to dry it thoroughly. Gently wipe each part with a cloth making sure all gaps are patted as well. Remove as much water as possible as this may cause corrosion and will damage the parts.
• Using a hair dryer is a common misconception in drying a wet cellphone. Do not use a hair dryer because it blows the air inwards to the small components of the cellphone. If it’s warm, this can cause corrosion as well.
• Use rice or desiccant to absorb moisture from the phone. Put the cellphone in a bowl of uncooked rice and leave it overnight. This will absorb the moisture out of the phone. If you have desiccant, use it instead of uncooked rice because it absorbs better. If you’re going to use a desiccant, use a plastic bag and put the phone and desiccant inside the bag. Rotate the phone in a different position after a few hours. Leave it overnight.
• Put the phone on top of a paper towel and check for signs of moisture after about four hours. If there’s still moisture, use the vacuum again and put back in a bowl of rice or bag of desiccant.
• If there’s no sign of moisture in the paper towel, put the battery back in the cellphone and turn it on.

If it still doesn’t work, then it’s time to go to a cellphone technician. Buy an emergency cellphone wet kit to be prepared if the same thing happens in the future.
